ALPUJARRA
HILLS AND VILLAGES
The terrain drops from the jagged heights of the Sierra Nevada to forested gorges and citrus groves; on the sierras lower slopes is the little-visited Alpujarras region, which has a series of tiny, whitewashed Moorish villages clinging precariously to the side of the hills. These villages provide our hotel accommodation and allow us to sample the delights of simple village life, cheap but good wines and local tapas. Indeed this is the area brought to life by Chris Stewarts famous book "Driving Over Lemons" Between the Sierra Nevada and the coastal ranges you will find a depression through which runs the rivers Guadalfeo, Adra and Andarax. These are fed from numerous springs which are a product of the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevadas, producing crystal clear waters enriched with minerals. Many of the villages have public drinking fountains where you can enjoy an ice cold glass of mineral water or fill a bottle for later. The Alpujarras offers something for everyone, the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada to the Coast is less than an hour. The contrasting views, the rich heritage as well as the open friendliness of the people makes this an ideal location for a walking holiday. Our tours link many of these villages with easy to moderate day tours allowing you to enjoy the area to the full. If you wish to just relax for a day then our local transport will take you and your luggage to the next village en route. Each night we stay either in one of our villas or in 2 star hotels on a room only basis. |
